If you’re looking to get a real sense of Bahamas beyond the beaches, nature and wildlife tours are the way to go. I’ve spent years exploring the islands and some of my favorite memories come from early mornings watching rare birds or paddling through mangroves where you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

For example, the Exuma Cays are more than just crystal-clear water and swimming pigs (though they’re definitely a highlight). Try a guided kayaking tour through the red mangroves around Great Guana Cay,you’ll spot pink flamingos, herons, and maybe even a shy sea turtle. And if you’re there in late winter or early spring, you might catch the migration of humpback whales off Eleuthera’s coast. It’s something you don’t hear about often but it’s absolutely worth timing your trip around.

One tip from experience: bring your own snorkeling mask if you have one, tours often provide gear but it’s hit or miss. Also, a light rain jacket comes in handy because tropical showers pop up faster than you expect, and those can make the wildlife even more active.
