Cycling tips from someone who’s been there

If you’re serious about cycling in the Bahamas, don’t expect smooth-as-glass pavement everywhere. Bring a bike that can handle some rough spots. I recommend starting early in the day, especially on islands like New Providence or Eleuthera, to avoid midday heat and traffic. Water’s your best friend here , I carry a hydration pack because it gets deceptively hot. Quick heads up: roads don’t always have shoulders so be ready to share the lane with locals. Also, plan your route with Google Maps but cross-check with locals, some shortcuts exist that you won't find online. One of my favorite rides is around Rock Sound on Eleuthera , quiet and scenic with just enough hills to make it interesting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about cycling in the Bahamas? I've got you covered.

Most of the quieter islands and outskirts have fairly safe roads with little traffic, but keep an eye out for potholes and local vehicles like golf carts. Wearing a helmet and bright colors will help. Early mornings are usually calmer too.
Nassau has several spots that rent out bikes, especially near Cable Beach and Junkanoo Beach. On islands like Eleuthera or Abaco, you’ll find a few local shops renting bikes, but it’s smart to book ahead or bring your own if you’re picky.
There aren’t many official bike trails like you might find in more mountainous places, but some islands have quieter backroads perfect for biking, like the routes around Elbow Cay or the scenic roads near Spanish Wells.
A hybrid or mountain bike works best because the island roads can be a bit rough or sandy in patches. Road bikes are doable but less comfortable on some of the bumpier stretches.
Yes, but they’re pretty niche. In Nassau, a few guides offer short cycling tours around the city, and on Eleuthera, some companies do guided rides near the coast. If you want something casual, just ask locally , you might find random groups or locals happy to show you around.
The rainy season (June to November) means afternoon storms that can pop up fast. Roads get slick and some unpaved parts turn muddy. If you cycle during this time, try mornings and check local weather before heading out.
