Columbus Monument

Bahamas

Things To Do Landmarks and Heritage Sites

On the northern tip of  Long Island sits the Columbus Monument. This statue commemorates the original inhabitants of the Bahamas, who inhabited Long Island centuries ago. They were wiped out by European colonisers. Christopher Columbus, made landfall on Long Island at the site commemorated by the monument, built on October 22, 1989.

The Columbus Monument sits on the highest point of Long Island, which is the second highest in The Bahamas. After taking in the historical importance of the monument, visitors will certainly enjoy the panoramic view of the clear, turquoise waters that surround the island.

Depending on the tides, the natural canal that runs past Columbus Monument is a great for kayakers. The breathtaking waters offer ample opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving, and sometimes turtle spotting.

The road to the monument, lush with vegetation, is also very rocky and unpaved so visitors are advised to be cautious. The monument can also be accessed by boat.
