A locals’ tip on Bahamas seafood

You want the freshest fish? Aim to eat near where the boats land early in the morning, especially on New Providence Island. I usually swing by the docks around 8 a.m. at Nassau’s Fish Market before heading to breakfast. Sometimes the fishermen will chat and let you know what’s freshest that day.

One local favorite I recommend is the grilled mahimahi with a side of guava barbeque sauce. It’s a little sweet, a little tangy, and totally Bahamian in spirit. And don’t skip jamaican rum cake or guava duff for dessert after your seafood feast,it balances the saltiness perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Bahamas seafood? Here’s what I usually get asked.

Hands down Arawak Cay, also called Fish Fry, near Nassau. The conch is fresher than anywhere else and locals know exactly how to fry it up,crispy outside, tender inside.
You don’t have to break the bank. While some waterfront restaurants serve pricier dishes, spots like Fish Fry or smaller island joints offer seafood that’s delicious and affordable.
I’d say conch salad is a favorite. It’s light, zesty, and really different from your usual ceviche. If you see it with a bit of habanero, even better.
Many spots, especially casual ones like those around Arawak Cay, are very kid-friendly. Outdoor seating, laid-back vibes, and dishes that even picky eaters usually enjoy.
Spring is lobster season, so if lobster is your thing, plan your trip around then. Otherwise, fish and conch are good year-round, but fresh catch tends to be better early in the morning.
Yes! Nassau’s Greycliff Market has fresh fish and shellfish daily. Also, some vendors at Arawak Cay sell prepared meals or raw seafood if you want to cook yourself.
