The Water Tower
Bahamas
In a cluster of Nassau's historical treasures, one monument, quite literally, stands tall above the others. A 15-minute walk from downtown Nassau, atop Bennet's Hill, is a structure commonly known as the Water Tower. It is the highest point on New Providence, and one which provides incredible, panoramic views of the entire island.
Erected in 1928, the tower's original purpose was to regulate water pressure on the island. At 126 feet tall, the white tower now serves as one of the island's most popular tourist attractions. Guests are welcome to challenge themselves to the 216-step climb to the observation deck at the top or pay a modest 50 cents for a more leisurely ride up in an elevator.
While in the vicinity, be sure to check out Fort Fincastle - one of New Providence's three forts built in the 1700s, and the Queen's Staircase - a 65-step wonder harnd carved and made out of limestone rock.
