The Versailles Garden (The Cloisters)

Bahamas

Things To Do Landmarks and Heritage Sites

Built in the 12th and 13th centuries by Augustinian monks in France, this lush garden and its incredible stonework have come a long way from home.

In 1969, inspired by the vision of a paradise for the rich and famous, A&P heir, Huntington Hartford bought the stonework with the intention of developing nearby Hog Island - known today as Paradise Island. The garden arrived in pieces - none of them numbered; it took two years and the help of artist and sculptor, Jean Castre-Manne for the oasis to be completed.

Today the garden - known as the Cloisters - stands on Paradise Island, meeting the edge of the Nassau Harbour. A space of tranquillity, the immaculate site is frequented by photographers and often chosen by romantic couples as a wedding photo op venue. The Cloister gardens are located on Paradise Island Drive, just a five-minute walk from Atlantis and Marina Village.
