The Salt House
Bahamas
'Expulsis Piratis Restituta Commercia' - 'Piracy expelled, commerce restored,' was the first motto of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, but if you put your ears up against some of the stone in the doorway of the Salt House in Inagua, there may be a chance that you will be able to hear the robust and raucous cries of some of the most famous pirates that ploughed through the waters of the Caribbean. You may also hear the echoes of the massive earthquake that swallowed the notorious pirate haven in Port Royal Jamaica.
This 18th century salt warehouse incorporates stones from the unfortunate town in its doorways. Today it is owned by Morton Bahamas Limited, the largest salt manufacture in the Bahamas.
