The Hermitage
Bahamas
Monsignor John C. Hawes, also known as Father Jerome, went to Cat island in 1939. Known as a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, he was best-known as an architect and a priest. When he arrived on Cat Island, he purchased the highest hilltop there: Mt. Alvernia, also known as Como Hill in New Bight, Cat Island. As the highest point in The Bahamas, Mt. Alvernia rises to 206 ft (63 m).
Upon Mt. Alvernia, Father Jerome built a church, which is still known to this day as 'The Hermitage.' There is a small area for parking at the base of Mt. Alvernia, and from there you are invited to hike to the top of the hill to get to the Hermitage. Though the Hermitage is miniature in size, its view is grand in stature. Standing in this hallowed space allows you to see an panoramic amazing view of Cat Island.
The Hermitage offers two great opportunities for photography. Around the middle of the day, external shots are magnificent with the surrounding background of the islands. During sunset, guests can take dazzling photos in this brilliant, golden light.
