Salt Beacon
Bahamas
The Salt Beacon is one of the most popular landmarks on Little Exuma. Its spectacular view overlooks the Eastern shoreline and the inland salt ponds. The Bahamas was a major salt-mining colony ever since the 16th century when the Spanish arrived. Although the Williams Town salt pond is no longer active, it once employed hundreds of people from the community.
Salt was harvested for shipping to destinations in North America, particularly Nova Scotia. The salt beacon was constructed to guide incoming ships in the salt trade. It was constructed of stone, and stands 30 feet high atop a cliff. The Salt Beacon is a reminder of an important period in Williams Town history and the history of the Bahamas.
A short walk along a planked walkway will lead you to the top of the hill, where a cool ocean breeze will invite you to stay a while and take in the view.
