Educulture Bahamas Ltd.
Bahamas
Founded in 2000 by Arlene Nash Ferguson, the educators at Educulture have been using their knowledge of Bahamian history to educate locals and visitors on one of The Bahamas' most culturally significant festivals - Junkanoo. Going beyond the rich hues and majestic costumes, Ferguson and her team want their visitors to understand the origins of the parade, which are a far cry from what we have seen on Bay Street in more recent years.
Born and raised in Nassau, Ferguson worked as an educator in local schools for more than 24 years. During her career, she took the opportunity to inform her students about their cultural heritage, encouraging them to delve further into exploring the country's past. With years of experience as an active participant in Junkanoo parades, Ferguson has also served on the National Junkanoo Committee for 24 years.
Today, she offers her expertise on the festival to those interested in learning more about the country's history; Educulture tours and Junkanoo workshops give visitors the opportunity to get a hands-on look at Junkanoo. Groups can expect everything from learning about slavery in The Bahamas to making individual Junkanoo masks. The Educulture Centre can be found at Iver House on Delancey Street, near to downtown Nassau.
