Doongalik Studios
Bahamas
Museums and Galleries
In an effort to transform the way Bahamians and people of other nationalities view the Bahamas, Jackson and Pam Burnside created the Doongalik Studios.
Featuring works by local artists and craftspeople, Doongalik promises an extraordinary experience and an opportunity to understand Bahamian life and heritage through the eyes of local artists. Keen to support artists of all ilks, the gallery hosts regular exhibitions, and has been known to promote creations ranging from quilts to paintings, and everything in between.
Based on Village Road, a 10-minute taxi ride from downtown Nassau, the art gallery and its sister gift shop, the Craft Cottage, share a lush, green garden, landscaped with murals and vibrant art pieces. Visitors can take their time exploring the gallery and admiring one-of-a-kind souvenirs in the shop.
Gallery owner, Pam Burnside, has expressed her enthusiasm and hopes for a strengthened relationship between the Bahamian artistic community and international visitors.
'It is our hope that by the year 2020, more tourists will come to The Bahamas for its art, culture, and heritage, rather than the sun, sand, and sea,' she said. 'We think that's important because we have such a rich culture. A lot of our visitors don't know about the beautiful art and cultural activities that we have going on, and, once they find out about it, they're just amazed.'
