New Plymouth Memorial Sculpture Garden
Bahamas
No visit to Green Turtle Cay would be complete without a stop at the New Plymouth Memorial Sculpture Garden. In the heart of the island's main settlement, New Plymouth, is a quiet garden dedicated to preserving the memory of the cay's loyalist history.
Featuring bronze sculptures of the town's prominent loyalist founders as well as their descendants and slaves, the garden is an informative oasis. Reflecting the loyalists' allegiance to the Crown, the sculptures are arranged in the pattern of the Union Jack.
Plaques detailing the deeds and achievements of the commemorated can be found throughout the site, along with a few surprises. The memorial dedicated to Jeanne Thompson, a descendant of slaves and contemporary playwright, is one of the highlights; Thompson is memorialised for being the country's second female attorney.
The memorial is free to visit. Those travelling from other islands can get to the island via private boat or one of the regularly scheduled ferries from Marsh Harbour.
