Green Turtle Cay
Bahamas
Nearly 250 years ago, a group of Americans, known as the loyalists, fled their country in search of a place under British rule that they could call home. Luckily for them, their journey didn't take very long - it ended just off the coast of Florida.
Settling in the Abacos, the loyalists were content to make their new homes on the island known as Green Turtle Cay (GTC). Over the centuries, the island has managed to preserve its old-world charm; today it offers history buffs a collection of impressive sites to explore.
The cay has as many sites of interest for those looking for a taste of the island life as it does for historians - at only three miles long, the island packs five pristine beaches and an abundance of natural attractions on and off shore. For visitors chasing a bit of adventure at sea, surrounding waters offer a plethora of living coral reefs to snorkelers and divers, and local waves challenge fisherman to take on the regional bonefish.
For those interested in seeing GTC for themselves, the nearest airport is Treasure Cay International Airport, which is situated five minutes (by car) from the ferry dock. Those flying into Marsh Harbour International Airport should allow for a 30-minute taxi ride to get to the ferry dock. Ferries are scheduled hourly from the Treasure Cay dock.
