Description

Guests are picked up from their location and taken to the cultural center. The drive to the center gives guests a quick tour of the settlements of the south shore of Freeport, Grand Bahama. The cultural center is located in the heart of the settlement of Hunters which is one of the older settlements on the island. Most of the friendly people are related by blood or marriage. At the cultural center, guests are introduced to Bahamian bush tea and pastry. Several aspects of the culture of The Bahamas are covered as they sip the hot tea and eat the pastry provided. The tea is made at the cultural center the way it was done years ago. The pastry is bought from the local neighbourhood bakery which used to be a home. It is a few minutes from the cultural center. The hands-on introduction reveals some of the local teas and bush medicines used by residence. Guests are given some of the basic local healing remedies, the plants they come from and their good use. The culture of Junkanoo, a festival parade that embodies the spirit of the people and their expression of life through music, dance and costume, gives guests a direct immersion. Costumes can be worn and used to take pictures. Cowbells are part of the instruments that make the music for Junkanoo. They are available for those brave enough to learn to shake them. The history of Junkanoo is given from its presumed inception by African slaves to the country. After further exploration and cultural interaction, guests are taken back to their pick-up point.
